Jane spoke fluently about herself; there were no tears and yet emotion was not absent, but simply contained. I was struck both by her insight into her problems and by her control. About half-way through the consultation, Jane told me that she would be moving from the area at the beginning of the next year. She knew that one day she wanted long-term therapy, and that though this was not possible now, she would like to see me as soon as I had a vacancy. She also said that she had become aware in her own work of how emotionally removed she felt from her clients, particularly when their difficulties were similar to her own.
I was told that she was a social worker and that her supervisor had suggested she contact me because ‘various issues’ had come up in her supervision. I explained that I did not have an immediate vacancy for regular meetings, whereupon Jane said she had been given the names of other therapists but as I was first on her list she had hoped to see me. I told her I would have a vacancy in June but there would not be much flexibility regarding the day or time for this appointment. Jane responded by saying that she did not mind having to wait and told me she was able to come at almost any time.
Through the transference therapists become people of great significance in that their words can be both healing and wounding. It was in part a response to the way in which psychoanalysis was being practised that Rogers developed his approach – client-centred counselling. He did not see it as the therapist’s task to interpret, and believed that psychoanalysis, because of the emphasis on interpretation, fostered dependency and thus inequality. Rogers argued that transference feelings, although they might come into the relationship formed between client and therapist, were less likely to occur with his approach.
