The conditions of measurement with the diffractometer and the disposition of the sample were maintained as constant as possible during the measurements, so that comparisons would be legitimate. In Table I the peak heights are shown following each annealing treatment for purposes of comparison. Annealing of PPBA for six hours at 245°C more than doubled the peak.
The results of the x-ray diffraction study show that PPBA and PPCPA possess a high degree of order, yet are not crystalline in the conventional sense. Since these polymers are atactic it was at first supposed that the order must be a two-dimensional lateral packing with longitudinal disorder. The molecule cannot however possess a cylindrical rod-like configuration and pack in the same way as poly-N-vinyl carbazole and other reported examples since calculation of the density shows that this would be too loose a structure.
