The anaesthetist has been and continues to be, like virtually no other specialist colleague, in tune with continuing observation and assessment of his patient’s vital functions and their maintenance. The DGAW recognized early on that their involvement in intensive care medicine had a positive influence on the anaesthetist’s work and working conditions and therefore made it a more attractive career path for young colleagues. The subject of intensive care medicine when setting guidelines for the position of lead anaesthetist was originally touched upon at a Committee Meeting on 29 September 1964.

Those who like paradoxes could express it as follows: the anaesthetist is the specialist for everything non-operative, for everything non-specialist, to a certain extent for everything perioperative, while the surgeon is the specialist for the specific operation«. « Naturally the anaesthetist must have the potential to achieve a reasonable career position. However, he also held the view that it was too soon for a professorial »Chair of Anaesthesia« or anaesthesia as an examination subject. He strongly advised against the trend to »separate anaesthesia from general surgery and to expand it in its own right as a specialty for all areas of surgery«.

There is one question which emerges at this point: did the prolonged discussion and delays, at times painful for those fighting for the recognition of the specialty, have any positive aspects? Some of these beneficial aspects are considered here: Having to assert oneself in order to win contentious and delicately balanced arguments achieves that most precious of possessions, solidarity, which our specialty enjoys until the present day. The unity of anaesthesia in all its diversity is certainly a consequence of these tribulations.
