Deshalb wird die Abhandlung noch mehr Mangel auf weisen, als unvermeidlich der Fall gewesen ware. Wenn ich trotz alledem mich zum Druck entschlossen habe, so deshalb, weil ich von verschiedenen Seiten dazu aufgefordert wurde, das Ganze auch in der vorliegenden Ge stalt wenigstens als Diskussionsgrundlage zu veroffentlichen. Besonderen Dank schulde ich hier Theodor Klauser, der die Herausgabe in dieser Reihe anregte und ermoglichte. Um die von niemand mehr als von mir selbst empfundene Unvollkom menheit zu betonen, bezeichne ich die Untersuchung als Versuch. Knappe Formulierung moge den Eindruck des Vorlaufigen noch unterstreichen. Die Denkmaler sollen fur sich sprechen; darum waren zahlreiche Abbildun gen notig. Das layout bringt es mit sich, daB sehr viele von dies en nur als Erinnerungsbilder gewertet werden konnen. Bessere und groBere Ab bildungen sind jeweils in den Anmerkungen genannt. Dabei ist keineswegs V ollstandigkeit angestrebt. Hingegen sind bewuBt auch Handbucher auf gefuhrt und Bilderwerke, die sich nicht ausschlieBlich an ein wissenschaft lich vorgebildetes Publikum wenden, damit auch derjenige, der sich nicht am Sitz einer groBen Bibliothek befindet, Nutzen hat.
